Reading Intervention

The difference between the regular reading tutoring and the Intensive Reading Intervention provided by Goode Learning is in the intensity, frequency and duration of the programming being provided. Goode Learning offers both regular reading tutoring and intensive intervention and instruction in reading. Both are offered by qualified teachers certified by the Ontario College of Teachers, and both types of supports are individualized to meet the needs of the student with instruction using research-informed and/or evidence-based resources. However, children who have significant gaps in their decoding skills often require more targeted and greater frequency of explicit instruction and repeated practice in order to consolidate their decoding and reading fluency skills than a weekly tutoring session is able to provide. Our teachers in our Intensive Reading Intervention programs are highly skilled in direct instruction and trained in using specific evidence based reading intervention programs supported by the recommendations in the Right To Read report commissioned by the Ontario Human Rights Commission and rigorously reviewed and approved by the Ontario Education Collaborative Marketplace (OECM). The Direct Instruction Intensive Reading Intervention requires a minimum commitment of 12 weeks. A commitment of 2 or 3 sessions per week is also required.

24 OR 36 Sessions of Direct Instruction:

• Each session is 75 minutes.
• Conducted over 12 consecutive weeks.
• Attendance at every scheduled session is expected.

Program Features:

• Baseline skills assessment before sessions begin to tailor instruction.
• Ongoing progress monitoring and communication with families.
• All necessary student materials provided.

Fee Structure:

2 Sessions per Week 

Total Fee: $3,600

Non-refundable Registration Fee: $200 (due with form submission)

Remaining Balance: $3,400 (due prior to beginning 12 week cycle)

3 Sessions per Week

Total Fee: $5,200

Non-refundable Registration Fee: $200 (due with form submission)

Remaining Balance: $5,000 (due prior to beginning 12 week cycle)

Children who struggle to read may demonstrate some of the following characteristics:

• Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words
• Make guesses at words based on the first letter, length or shape of the word
• Rely on pictures to guess at words
• Become overwhelmed by text and be reluctant to read
• Be aware that they are struggling and become frustrated and/or discouraged
• Lack confidence and/or begin to think negatively about their abilities

The good news is that we can help with this! Our focus at Goode Learning is to provide explicit, systematic instruction in pre-reading and reading skills.  We will develop an individualized plan for your child which includes explicit instruction in the phonological awareness skills needed in order to improve reading decoding, accuracy and fluency using evidence and research-based interventions.

Phonological awareness refers to the ability to recognize and manipulate the sounds of spoken language. It includes understanding how words can be segmented into syllables and individual sounds, and how sounds can be blended to form words. This skill is crucial for learning to read, as it helps children connect sounds with letters and decode words effectively. Our program incorporates systematic instruction to enhance phonological awareness, providing a strong foundation for reading development, enabling children to progress confidently and independently in their literacy journey.

At Goode Learning, we begin with a comprehensive initial assessment that assesses your child's literacy skills, specific challenges, and strengths. Based on the results, our certified teachers will recommend the most suitable intervention program and provide explicit, targeted instruction to develop your child’s skills. Our goal is to ensure that each child receives the most effective support, enabling them to build foundational literacy skills and gain confidence in their reading abilities.

The skills assessment may include:

• Screening of phonological awareness and phonics skills based on presenting needs
• Program Placement Testing using the Corrective Reading Decoding placement test
• Standardized academic assessment

We also welcome any prior assessments that you wish to share with us as a starting point for review (e.g., school based academic assessments, psycho-educational assessment, speech and language assessment etc.).

Depending on the student, assessment may take place over one or two 60 minute assessment sessions and is included in the registration fee.

You will then receive a brief written report which includes:

• A summary of information shared with us
• Assessment results
• Recommendations for the interventions that would work best to address specific gaps in your child’s learning

Intervention is offered in person at our Mississauga location by an experienced literacy teacher qualified through the Ontario College of Teachers.

Progress varies depending on the individual needs and starting point of each child, but most students show significant improvements in their reading skills within the first few weeks of our intervention program. Our certified teachers use evidence-based methods to target specific areas of difficulty, helping students improve their phonemic awareness, decoding skills, fluency, and comprehension. Regular monitoring and progress reports ensure that parents are kept informed of their child's advancements. Additionally, our focus on engaging and interactive sessions helps foster a love for reading, making it more likely that your child will continue to grow and succeed long after the program concludes.

Parental involvement is crucial to the success of our reading intervention services at Goode Learning. We keep parents informed through regular updates and detailed progress reports, highlighting their child's achievements and areas needing further attention. Our certified teachers also provide actionable feedback and recommend activities that parents can do at home to reinforce the skills being taught. Open communication channels allow parents to discuss any concerns or questions they may have, ensuring a collaborative approach to their child's literacy development. This partnership helps create a supportive learning environment both at home and during tutoring sessions, maximizing the effectiveness of the intervention program.
