Develop Reading Skills with Our Approach to Reading Intervention
All About the Science of Reading
Our evidence-based approach to reading instruction is rooted in the Science of Reading, which is in alignment with the Ontario curriculum and the Ontario Human Rights Commission recommendations found in their 2022 Right to Read inquiry report.
What is reading?
Both the Simple View of Reading (Gough and Turner, 1986) and the Scarborough Reading Rope (Dr. Hollis Scarborough, 1990) break down reading skills into two different components: Language Comprehension and Decoding (Word Recognition). In both models, these two components work together to develop empowered readers who understand and think critically about what they have read.

This visual of a version of the Scarborough Reading Rope shows there are many strands or foundational skills required to become an empowered reader.

The bottom part of the rope focuses on Phonological and Phonemic Awareness and Phonics. Once a child is able to decode a word, they also need to understand what they have read which is represented by the top of the rope. Those skills develop from infancy as children learn to understand and use spoken language to make sense of their world. A child must have strong skills in both the top and bottom portions of the rope for success with reading. As a child’s word recognition skills improve, typically reading comprehension also improves as the mental energy required to decode the words is reduced and understanding of what is being read becomes the focus.
Systematic
We create customized learning plans based on thorough initial assessments, ensuring that each child's specific needs are addressed, leading to more effective and targeted reading support.
To that end, sounds are taught in a specific sequence and in a specific manner through explicit instruction.
Structured
Our high-quality Reading Intervention services are structured and scaffolded, introducing a new skill with opportunities for teacher modelling followed by shared and individual repetition and practice. This approach promotes predictability and consolidation of learning.
Reinforced
Our teachers create a positive and encouraging atmosphere that helps reduce anxiety around reading, making it easier for students to engage with the material and build confidence in their abilities.
Skills taught in previous lessons continue to be reviewed and practiced so that they can be consolidated
Our Approach
Families are required to commit to a minimum of two 75 minute sessions per week and a 12 week minimum enrollment.
